Visualization efforts to reduce environmental impact Vol.1 ~Electrolytic copper and refined lead ~

As climate change becomes more serious, efforts to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG), which are believed to be the cause of climate change, and to achieve carbon neutrality are becoming increasingly important. Mitsubishi Materials Group has defined "For people, society and the earth, circulating resources for a sustainable future" as "Our Commitment," and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by the fiscal year ending March 2046, five years ahead of the national target, and to achieve an effective 100% self-sufficiency rate in renewable energy by the fiscal year ending March 2051.
As one of the efforts to achieve such goals, the Group is working on calculating the Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP), which is promoted by the Ministry of the Environment and other organizations.
CFP represents the CO2 equivalent of the total amount of GHG emissions throughout the entire life cycle of a product or service, based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This indicator enables the identification of GHG emission reduction measures that should be prioritized or focused on from a comprehensive perspective.

In 2024, we calculated the CFP for the "electrolytic copper," a main product of the Metals business, which has a large GHG emission rate within the Group. The calculation covers electrolytic copper produced in the fiscal year ended March 2023 at the Naoshima Smelter & Refinery and the Onahama Smelter & Refinery of Onahama Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd., a Group company.
We evaluated each process from "Cradle to Gate" (from raw material procurement to product manufacturing and shipment).
In addition, we calculated the CFP for the refined lead produced by a Group company Hosokura Metal Mining Co., Ltd. in the fiscal year ended March 2024. We evaluated the process of recycling used lead batteries to produce refined lead.
For both electrolytic copper and refined lead, our CFP calculation processes were verified through critical reviews by a third party to ensure objectivity and reliability.
The Group will continue to quantitatively evaluate the environmental impact of our major products and promote initiatives related to climate change.
